I would like to tell you a story about a small German company, that exists on the market for more than fifteen years. It is a company that offers enterprise integration services and a monitoring tool that they have developed themselves.
For many years the company was selling the product that was designed by technicians. The application was, to put it mildly, not looking good, but the management of the company did not see any problem in it. Not that it was in general some very good company - it was not and their product was swarming with all sort of bugs. Nevertheless, to be so shortsighted and not to understand that offering an badly designed application simply screams that you are offering something that is most likely unreliable, full of bugs and not to be trusted is really nothing less but a catastrophe.
Yet, so many do it.
Good design is not what it seems to you that looks good. To be able to see good design, it is necessary to know something about design or to have a talent for it. Or both. It is a painful fact that the majority of people does not have almost any feeling for aesthetics, and therefor should not design cars, their own homes and certainly not application UIs.
So many business owners do not even think that it is not appropriate to give a programmer a task to design a table with data, for example. So many focus on the task to satisfy business needs of an app, and in the same time completely forget how that table with data, UI or an app in general looks. It is even worse that good design of an app usually does not represent some significant additional time. To make a bad-looking application, time will be spent anyhow, so why not make a good-looking one?
Here are some things that I created all the way back since 1999.

Making good-looking software matters, simply because making this world a nicer place matters. Making stakeholders happy also matters and by creating beautifully apps, the chance of a successful sale is increasing, customers are more happy, spending more money on your products and services and at the end, it is a win-win situation for all.
Taking everything said into consideration, one really has to be shortsighted to ignore all benefits of good design, just because she or he personally does not understand it nor has any feeling for it.
If you plan to contact me to contribute in the development where design plays no role, you could probably be able to find someone who would better suit your needs. Yet if you agree with me that good design is going to help us make something good, then I am your best choice, so please contact me!
